Men's Junior World Championship - Algeria 2017

Postby mikh » Sun Jan 08, 2017 7:54 pm

Qualifiers in Europe are over and a one major surprise comes from the Faroe Islands, where the locals have just qualified for the first time in their history to any kind of final tournament.

They won on Friday against favourites Switzerland (28:24): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLvaM080E2k
Yesterday Switzerland won only 28:26 against Finland, which meant they were out and today's match between Finland and the Faroe I. was to decide the team going through. Faroe won 29:27 in the end and finished with maximum of points.

Both Faroe goalies play abroad, at Flensburg and Skjern. They have 3 other players abroad, at Flensburg, Ringstedt (Denmark) and Sydhavsoerne (Denmark).

Congratulations to them! Looking forward to seeing them in Algeria next summer!

Other qualifiers from Europe are:
- Russia (won +1 a thriller final match against the Netherlands; the Dutch would've qualified in case of a draw)
- Denmark after a close match against Sweden, in Romania
- Macedonia (same number of points as Portugal, 2 goals more in goal difference, in a group hosted by Macedonia and in which Poland performed very bad)
- Slovenia, after a 20:17 win in Slovakia against the hosts
- Iceland, after only 2 match-days, in a group in which Serbia lost all matches at home (against Lithuania and Greece too  )
- Hungary after a decisive match against Czech R. today, in Vienna, in a group in which Montenegro lost all matches 10:0 because... they couldn't fly due to heavy snowfalls. Apparently EHF thinks this is ok: http://www.eurohandball.com/article/027 ... ther+chaos

Also, for some reason Belarus didn't play in the qualification tournament. Maybe someone has some information about this.

France, Spain, Germany, Croatia and Norway were automatically qualified.

Teams from other continents are:
Africa: Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and... Burkina Faso :!:
Asia: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Korea
Americas: tournament to follow later this year
