Roland Garros 2014

Postby Des57 » Sat May 17, 2014 9:05 am

Since my last topic about Australian Open was such a big succes :) (one person liked it  ) ,I decided to open one for Roland Garros.
We are one week away from the start of the tournament.I know many believe to be boring since Nadal is once again the big favourite, but I think and hope we'll have a new champion this year.Djokovic was so close last year,Wawrinka can beat anyone on a good day and there's alway Federer.I will go with Nole and Serena as champions. It's obvious who I cheer for,but I'm more a fan of the game,I like many other players like Rafa,Dimitrov,Gulbis,Haas,Monfils. So who do you cheer for?To enter in the atmosphere of the competition and to have some fun I will ask some questions.Feel free to answer. :) Here we go.
1.Will Federer win another Grand Slam?
2.Roger,Rafa,Nole or Andy?
3.Should women have the same prize money as men? :)
4.King of jokes.Nastase or Djokovic?
5.Favourite Grand Slam?
6.One-handed or two-handed backhand?
7.Seles or Graff?
8.Blue clay.Yes or no.
9.Miss tennis.Ana Ivanovic,Maria Sharapova,E.Bouchard,Julia Görges,Caro Wozniacki? :p
10.Best serve.Serena or Andy Roddick?
11.Tie break in the final set of a GS.Yes or no?

Great initiative! :p

Well, Roland Garros is my favourite Grand Slam, clay court tennis is much more spectacular for me, long rallies and anything can happen. I can not watch an Isner-Karlovic clash on grass and counting aces for example...

Maybe Rafa is favourite this year too but he is not so convincing nowadays. I would bet on Nole but there are so many great players besides big 4 that I could easily lose my money. :D

I support tiebreak in final set because it can mitigate the injustice of the draw. Endless matches do not make any sense, if you have hard opponents on the way and spend 3 times more hours on the court, you can hardly reach to the top.

Who is my favourite player?
I like all of them for different reasons. Roger because of his elegance and results. He plays without any exertions, knows everything about the game. Rafa because of his persistence, humility for tennis. Nole has no weaknesses, great fighter with fantastic backhand and concentration skills. Murray in good form hits no mistake, anticipates and concentrates on the highest level.

Serve: 1. Federer, 2. Nadal, 3. Djokovic, 4. Murray
Forehand: 1. Federer, 2. Nadal, 3. Djokovic, 4. Murray
Backhand: 1. Djokovic, 2. Murray, 3. Federer, 4. Nadal
Volley: 1. Federer, 2. Murray, 3. Djokovic, 4. Nadal
Endurance, speed: 1. Murray, 2. Nadal, 3. Djokovic, 4. Federer
Fighting, concentration: 1. Djokovic, 2. Nadal, 3. Murray, 4. Federer

I knew you would like it Galpa. :) I'm surprised you don't put Wawrinka's backhand in your top 4.Now my time to answer

1.Sadly no,I don't think Roger will win another Slam.
2.Roger than Andy and Rafa.I respect Djokovic, but he wastes too many points for my taste.
3.Yes,even if they only play 2 out of 3 in Grand Slams.
4.Nastase ofc. :)
5.I would say OZ Open, even if I also like Wimbledon
6.One-handed backhand for sure.
7.Graff
8.I didn't like the blue clay.I prefer the red one.
9.Julia Gorgeous Görges. :D
10.Serena
11.I don't like final set tie-break.I prefer the 5-6 our games even those like Mahut-Isner. :)

Because I compared the abilities of Big 4! ;)
But you are right, Wawrinka has the most efficient and spectacular backhand. He has to win more to be considered though. 8:)

As a fan I support 1 handed backhand but as a player I prefer 2 handed (that's my strength :P ). Simply it is more stable...

I hope Roger will win another Grand Slam in his career, maybe Wimbledon.

My taste:
1. Ana Ivanovic and Sorana Cirstea ;)

Agree about the backhand. The one-handed offers much more angle though, but as you say the two-handed is more stable. You don't need to tell that to Federer.Everyone that plays him, plays him mainly on the back hand. :D
And how could I forget Sorana? :)

Victoria Azarenka will miss the French Open because of a left foot injury. :(

"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in Roland Garros this year. Working hard on my recovery & getting back on the court," the former top-ranked player said Sunday on Twitter.

Azarenka last played on tour at Indian Wells,on March 7.

I'm sorry, I was too busy recently. I don't have any favourite player from current list, there is too much fluctuation, except few players (Williams, Sharapova, Azarenka, Radwanska). Wozniacki, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Stosur, Cornet, Safarova, Kvitova etc. had 1-2 great seasons and then nothing, extremely unstable performance from all of them.

I preferred Clijsters, Henin, Hingis, Davenport, Dementieva, Capriati era. Those were tennis players! :p

Yesterday I watched Errani vs Keys. We will hear a lot about the American, she has brutal power, unfortunately lack of experience was crucial this time.

Wawrinka, Nishikori out! ](*,)

I also saw the game and I totally agree with you.Keys will be an important player in WTA, I have no doubt about it.It's very good that we have a group of talented young players like Donna Vekic,Schmiedlova,Bouchard,Belinda Bencic,Svitolina that will take over the game hopefully in some years time.

The 20 year old Spanish made the upset of the day beating with double 6-2, the curent champion and number 1 seed Serena Williams. =D> It's not a secret that I don't like Serena, her style of play and her complete dominance of the WTA.Now Macha,Ana and Simona have open ground.Come on girls! :p

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will meet in their second Roland Garros final after wins over Gulbis and Murray.
I expect a very physical game.OFC i hope to see Nadal win he's ninth title, but I think Nole has a small advantage.

Rafa beats Nole in a 4 sets game and wins his 9th Roland Garros title and his 14 Grand Slam. =D> With this victory Rafa keeps his number one spot in the ATP rankings. To be onest I expected more from Nole,I even saw him as the winner, but it's damn hard to beat Nadal in a five sets game.
